Linking subjects is a core step in completing Grado’s academic structure. Once subjects are created, they must be linked to programs, disciplines, and classes so they appear correctly in enrollment, advising, and grading modules.

This article explains how subjects interact across the system and why proper linkages are essential for accurate records and grade computations.

Understanding the Subject Link Hierarchy

Subjects in Grado connect key academic components through the following hierarchy:

• Curriculum – Lists the subjects required per program or grade level.
• Subject – Contains setup details such as units, codes, grading configuration, and behavior tags.
• Class – A specific term-based instance of a subject assigned to a teacher and section.
• Discipline – Groups related subjects under a single curriculum requirement.
• Student Grades – Automatically generated when a class is linked to a subject.

💡 If a subject isn’t linked to a curriculum, it won’t appear during class creation, enrollment, or report generation.

Linking Subjects to Curricula

Subjects linked to a curriculum define the required courses for a program or grade level. This determines what appears during:

• Student advising and enrollment
• Class creation
• Grade computation and report card generation

When setting up a curriculum, add each subject and specify its term (e.g., Semester 1, Yearlong) and level (e.g., Grade 10, 1st Year College).

Linking Subjects to Classes

A Class is a specific offering of a subject in a given term. When a class is created, the subject’s setup — such as grade items, transmutation table, and behavior code — automatically applies.

Correct linkage ensures:

• Grade columns display properly in Grade Sheets
• Grades compute accurately
• Report cards pull the correct subject titles and codes

If the class subject matches one in a student’s curriculum, it is automatically credited to their program checklist.

Linking Subjects to Disciplines

A Discipline groups related subjects under one curriculum requirement. This is used when students can choose from several subjects to fulfill a single requirement.

Example: If all programs require Physical Education 2, and the school offers Volleyball, Basketball, and Tennis, these subjects are linked under the PE 2 discipline. A student enrolled in Volleyball will have that grade credited toward the PE 2 requirement.
